The 2022 FIFA World Cup will be hosted by Qatar from November 20, 2022, to December 18, 2022. The tournament will span over a period of 29 days wherein 32 teams will take part and a total of 64 matches will be played. South Korea is also one of the qualified teams for the tournament. Although the South Korean national team hasn’t won any previous FIFA World Cup they are a strong team and capable of defeating any team when they are in form. FIFA World Cups are quadrennial events organized by FIFA, so far 21 tournaments have been organized by FIFA wherein the South American nation Brazil emerged as the most successful team with 5 titles. The tournament is generally organized during the June-July months, however, due to intense heat in Qatar, the matches will be played during the November-December months.
The tournament will feature 32 teams which in total will be playing 64 matches in two stages, the first stage i.e. Group stage will have 48 matches, while the next stage i.e. Knockout stage will have 16 matches. During the group stage, all 32 teams will be divided into 8 groups having 4 teams each, the matches will be played in a round-robin format in which each team will face all other teams of the group. In the knockout stage, matches will be played in a single-elimination format meaning the loser of any match will be out of contention to win the world cup.
South Korea on February 1, 2022, qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup as one of the AFC Third Round Group A top two teams. This will be the 11th appearance of the South Korean team at the FIFA World Cups, their best performance came in 2002 when they stood in fourth place, the tournament was co-hosted by South Korea and Japan. The South Korean team is consistently featured at the FIFA World Cups since 1986. The first match of the tournament as per Korea Standard Time (KST) will be played between Qatar and Ecuador on November 21, 2022, at 1:00 AM at Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor and the all-important final match will take place on December 19, 2022, at 12:00 AM between the two semi-final winners at the Lusail Iconic Stadium in Lusail.
