About FIFA World Cups

FIFA World Cups are quadrennial international men’s football championships organised by FIFA, in which national teams from various countries compete to win the coveted crown of being called world champions. Brazil is the most successful team in the tournament with 5 titles to its name.

In the 2022 FIFA World Cup, a total of 32 national teams will take part in the competition which will last for 29 days. As per the competition format of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, a total of 64 matches will be played in two stages, in the first stage which is the group stage, 48 matches will be played. For this stage, all 32 teams will be divided into 8 groups having 4 teams each. Each team in a group will contest one match against the other two teams of the group, accordingly, three matches will be given to all teams to showcase their best and on the basis of the performance of the teams, the top two teams from each group will be selected for the next stage of the tournament. The performance of the teams in the group stage can be checked on the 2022 FIFA World Cup Points Table.

The Second Stage will be the knockout stage which will be played in a single-elimination format i.e. if any team loses any match then the team will be out of contention to win the World Cup. Initially, 32 teams took part in the competition, after the group stage 16 teams will be left in the tournament. These 16 teams will compete in the Round of 16 in which 8 matches will be played and the winners of the 8 matches will advance to the next round which is the Quarter-Final round.

During, the Quarter-final stage four matches will be played in which the 8 winners from the round of 16 will compete. The winners of these four matches will advance to the Semi-Final stage of the tournament. Thereafter, two matches will be played in the Semi-final round of the tournament, wherein the winners of both semi-final matches will advance to play the final match while the loser of the two semi-final matches will contest for third place in the tournament.
